Obituary for Carol A. Moore
Carol A. (Mathewson) Moore. We have lost our truly loved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Cousin and Friend. Carol died after a short battle with cancer on April 11, 2022. She was born on February 10, 1938 in Owen, WI to Virginia (Swanson) and Kenneth L. Mathewson. She attended school in Owen, graduating in 1956. Carol then moved to UW Eau Claire and earned her BS in Education with a minor in Fine Arts, graduating in 1960.
Carol met who would later be her future husband, Frank B. Moore, when he started his teaching career in Owen where Carol’s mother, Virginia, was an elementary teacher. Frank was Carol’s high school history teacher in her senior year. She said he was one of the toughest teachers she ever had and that helped to prepare her for college. Carol attended UW Eau Claire in 1956 while Frank was in the Army, stationed in France and Germany. They began seeing each other when he returned to the United States. Frank and Carol married on Thanksgiving Day in 1960. Being teachers, they moved to their jobs. Their first home was in Withee where they had their first daughter, Cheryl. They then moved to the Chequamegon National Forest where Frank was an educator for Job Corps. Their second daughter, Melissa was born there. When the Job Corps center closed they then had homes in Crandon, Wabeno and Brillion, WI.
Carol showed a love of art, music and literature from an early age. Her parents encouraged her with a piano and a violin. Carol was such a voracious reader at a very early age that the town librarian told her mother that she would run out of books eventually. In retirement, she would read a book a day. She kept her first gift of art supplies in a wooden case her entire life and stated that it was one of the best presents she ever received. In high school Carol taught herself the Norwegian art of Rosemaling. This continued for more than 60 years.
In 1995 Carol was awarded a Gold Medal from The Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum for Rosemaling. She has her painting in museums around the world and has been featured in 3 books, the most recent from Japan.
Carol spent her life as an educator. She began as a kindergarten teacher and later worked as the Adult Education Coordinator for FVTC. She began teaching Rosemaling in 1974 and continued to teach full time for the next 25 years. She retired from instruction in 1999 to care for her mother.
Carol was an avid historian and genealogist. She traced both her and her husband’s family to the American Revolution, the Mayflower and centuries beyond. As a result of her research, Carol was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Mayflower Society. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Her family had a strong Masonic tradition. Carol was a member of Faith United Methodist Church for many years where she was also a member of the choir.
Carol was predeceased by her husband, Frank B. Moore, her parents, Kenneth and Virginia Mathewson, her in laws, Frank E. and Mabel Moore, her granddaughter, Charlotte Nooe, her son in law, Daniel Bush, brothers in law, Ralph and Ray Moore and sister in law, Carol Enerson. She is survived by her children, Cheryl Bush and Melissa Moore Nooe, her grandsons, Drew and Dylan Bush and Christiaan Nooe, her brother, Jeff (Carol) Mathewson, brother in law, Claire Enerson, sisters in law, Carole Moore and Jennie Moore, her nieces, Carrie Rosenstein, Jeanne Shoesmith, Kathy Blair and Jennifer Kapla and nephews Craig Enerson, Bruce Enerson and John Moore.
The Moore family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers from Heartland Hospice and her favorite caregivers at Courtyard Assisted Living in Oshkosh.
There will be a private funeral service for family in Oshkosh. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Withee, WI.
