Obituary for Jean Monica Leetch (Stevens)

In 1953, about a mile off highway 116, between Omro and Winneconne, there was on Frank Ginnow’s farm, L.H. “Red” Strehlow’s Flight School. It was an X-shaped 1800-foot runway. It doubled as Frank’s cow pasture, and when a plane wanted to take off or land, Jerry Chamberlain got on his motorbike and chased the cows to another area.

This is where Jean Stevens earned her single-engine, private pilot license in an Aeronca Champ. Jean Monica Stevens was born December 10, 1933, in Omro, Wisconsin to Harry and Lucy (Blase) Stevens, she was one of midwife Sophie Yorty’s babies.

She attended the Omro public school system and graduated in 1951. She attended Virginia Springgate’s Oshkosh Business College.

On May 1, 1954, she married Lawrence A. Chappa; they had four children, Cynthia, Michael, Laura, and Jeffrey. Jean divorced Lawrence in 1972. On September 22, 1979 she married Donald Leetch.

She was a charter member of Omro Women’s Service League, she was a seventeen-year member of Omro Study Club, and held all offices twice and served on all committees. She was a president and long-time member, then honorary member of (Oshkosh) Lakeside Quilters. She greatly enjoyed the several round robins, in Omro, she was a Bluebird and Campfire leader, Girl Scout leader in Ozark, Alabama and a 4-H leader.

She is survived by her children, Michael Anthony Chappa, Laura Ann Doubek, and Jeffrey James (Linda) Chappa; grandchildren Dorian Chappa, Camille Henseler, Ryan A. Harvath (Dennis Garcia Flores), Kendrik (Tiffani) Chappa, and Tabytha (fiancé Alex Bernard) Chappa; great-grandchildren Keona Gomoll, Juniper Metcher, Lionna Chappa, and Maximus Chappa. Jean is also survived by one step-child who always cared about late husband Don’s feelings and he had them, Duane A. Leetch and devoted wife, Linda. Other survivors include Jean’s several nieces and nephews.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Leetch; parents; daughter Cynthia Chappa; sisters Ruth Vonderloh and Harriet Lien, and little Angel.

Jean’s special people were Gerry Karns, Shar Longworth, Susie Gruenwald, Doug Marone (Jean’s attorney with a heart), and Katherine Roeske and Emily Roeske.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Oshkosh Area Humane Society, 1925 Shelter Court, Oshkosh, WI 54901. Jean hopes you will wear happy clothes in memory of her.
