Obituary for May Catherine Ziebell
On Monday, January 25, 2021 our dear Aunt May found her way home, and rejoined her beloved husband and family in heaven. She died peacefully at Sharehaven in Oshkosh, where she had lived for the past four years, asking one last time, “What day is it?”. It was her homecoming day!
May was born on May 30, 1924 to Loren and Margaret (Hagene) Sheets in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. She spent her entire life in Oshkosh, marrying her high school sweetheart, John A. Ziebell on May 24, 1946 at her parent’s home, as her mother was very ill and could not leave her bed. Her mother died a week later.
John and May lived a good life filled with dear friends and family. They built a lovely home on the far west side of Oshkosh where the family gathered for Easter dinners, summer cook outs and volleyball. They also had a wonderful cottage on Lake Butte des Mortes, where we all gathered during the summers. So many cherished family memories were made in both homes.
May was generous with her time and resources to all of us. She was a longtime volunteer with Mercy Medical Center, the Paine Art Center, the Red Cross, Peace Lutheran Church, as well as a 60-year member of P.E.O. Oshkosh chapter BA.
May was preceded in death by her father and mother, Loren and Margaret Sheets, her step mother, Hester Sheets, her husband, John Ziebell, her sister, Lorraine Bowen, brother in law, Donald Bowen and her nephew in law, John Schellpfeffer. She is survived by her nephew Ted (Karen) Bowen, and nieces Margie Schellpfeffer, and Cindy (Bill) Lemke. She is also survived by great nieces and nephews Ed Bowen and Ann Potratz, Brendon Schellpfeffer and Kaity Olsen, and Matt Lemke and Carrie Chappa. She also leaves twelve great great nieces and nephews.
A private family funeral service was held. May will be laid to rest at Lakeview Memorial Park, next to her husband. She will be dearly missed by all of us. If anyone would like to give a memorial in May’s name to Evergreen Foundation that would be greatly appreciated. The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Sharehaven for their compassionate care of our dear Aunt and also for being with her when she passed.
