Obituary for Orv Hando

Orville “Orv” E. Hando, 87, Oshkosh, WI, passed away peacefully at home on November 9, 2021. Orv is survived by his sons; Timothy (Greta) Hando and Thomas (Merrill) Hando; and four cherished grandchildren, Jeff, Lauren, Annika and Matthew. He is also survived by many other dear relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Jeanette E. Hando (neé Backer) in 2013.

Orv was born and raised in Oshkosh, WI on November 30, 1933. He received a B.S. in Education from Martin Luther College and a M.S. in Education from Marquette University. He was the first in his family to graduate from college. While in college, he taught all eight grades in a one-room school house in Lomira, WI as an emergency fill-in for several months. He also taught at Jerusalem School in Milwaukee, WI and was the long-standing principal and 7th and 8th grade teacher at Good Shepherd’s Lutheran School in West Allis, WI for nearly 40 years. His field of expertise was math. While at Good Shepherd’s, he was also the head organist and directed the church choir. He also served on the Board of Regents of Wisconsin Lutheran College. Throughout his life he was an extremely active member of Good Shepherd’s, Martin Luther and Grace Lutheran Churches.

After retiring from teaching, he and Jeanette moved into his familial home in Oshkosh that was filled with pleasant memories of his childhood and his cherished parents, Orv Senior and Elfriede. Along with a home that he meticulously maintained, he had a special bond and was very proud of the city of Oshkosh. He was an active member of the Winnebago County Historical & Archeological Society and was involved in the restoration of The Morgan House. He was also an active member at the downtown YMCA and the Oshkosh Seniors Center. During his life, he enjoyed music, especially attending the symphony at the Marcus Performing Arts Center in Milwaukee and events at the Grand in Oshkosh. He also had a penchant for German cars and taking long rides on his Honda Goldwing motorcycle.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Orv to your favorite charity, or to one of the following institutions, Martin Luther School in Oshkosh, Good Shepherd in West Allis, the Oshkosh Seniors Center or the Oshkosh YMCA, is appreciated.

A Memorial Service will take place outdoors, rain or shine, at Lake View Memorial Park, in Oshkosh, at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 17th, with an outdoor reception to follow. Private interment at Lake View Memorial Park.
