Obituary for Robert Martin Unmuth

Robert Unmuth, 67, passed away in Oshkosh, WI on July 13, 2022. He was born on June 2, 1955 in Appleton, WI to George E. and Beverly A. (Dichtl) Unmuth.

Bob attended St. Mary’s elementary school in Appleton, then moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he graduated from Central High School in 1975. He completed an Associate’s Degree in Marketing at Fox Valley Technical College after returning to Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Bob was very proud of his tavern, Chasers, in Oshkosh that he and his partner Tracy opened in 1992. He ran the bar for over 20 years. It must have been in his blood, Bob’s second great-grandfather, Frank Unmuth, emigrated from Germany and owned a brewery in Appleton in the 1860s that eventually became the Walter brewery of Adler Brau fame.

Bob loved to be surrounded by people. He served a Thanksgiving meal at his bar for people with nowhere else to go, and also made sure his bar was one of the few open on Christmas Eve for people who were alone. Bob welcomed everyone, and one of his nieces’s fondest memories was when Bob made his nieces Shirley Temples at his bar. Bob also hosted a celebration of life for his father after he passed away.

Bob loved to cook and prided himself on being able to cook great dinners from inexpensive ingredients. It took him a while, but he finally replicated his dad’s bean soup. He also loved to grill outdoors in the summer, especially ribs.

He had a MG Midget and he loved cruising down Wisconsin county roads, often visiting the quarries. He loved to visit state parks, especially in Wisconsin Dells and High Cliff state park. He also had a motorcycle that he loved to ride around Oshkosh. He would often walk in Menominee Park, which was near his home.

Bob is survived by his brothers, Eugene E. (Sandra) Unmuth of Mckinney, TX, William P. Unmuth of Oshkosh; sister, Kathleen (Mike) Martin of Parker, CO; and nieces, Katherine (Rudy) Unmuth Karimi of Dallas, TX, Natalie (Alvaro) Barraza of Carrollton, TX, and Alyssa (Justin) Williams Taylor of Philadelphia, PA.

He is preceded in death by his parents, George E. and Beverly A. (Dichtl) Unmuth; grandparents, Frank and Bernice Dichtl, and George Unmuth and Margaret Schulte.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at The Boot’s Saloon (Bob’s former bar “Chasers”), 701 Merritt Ave, Oshkosh, WI on Saturday, July 30, at 1pm. Come raise a toast for Bob!
