Obituary for Ernest H. Barber

Ernest “Ernie” H. Barber, age 90, passed away at Evergreen Retirement Community in Oshkosh on Wednesday, February 13, 2013. He was born in New York City on February 5, 1923 the son of the late Otto Berthold and Columbia (Kiefer) Barber. On July 7, 1945 he married his wife of 55 years, Frances Andrews who preceded him in death in 2000. Ernie was proud to have served in the Merchant Marines from 1941 to 1945 after having graduated from King’s Point Merchant Marine Academy. He retired from Combustion Engineering as Northeast Regional Sales Manager in 1980. Puttering around his home, raising a garden, playing cribbage, watching sports, and caring for his pets were among his favorite activities. Ernie will be remembered for his kindness and sense of humor. He had great pride in his grandchildren.

Ernie is survived by his children: Dr. Ellen (Bob) Waldeck of Lancaster, PA and Dr. Frank (Jane) Barber of Oshkosh; and grandchildren: Andrew Waldeck, and Hunter and Addison Barber. He was preceded in death by his sister, Flora (Ernest) Neubig.

A memorial service will be at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 24, 2013 in the chapel at Evergreen Retirement Community, 1130 N. Westfield St., Oshkosh, WI 54902. Friends will be received from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

The family extends a special thank you to Aurora Dialysis, Evergreen Retirement Community, and Oshkosh City Cab for their wonderful care of Ernie over the past several years.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established for the Evergreen Foundation.
