Obituary for Geraldine Yvonne Hanson (Roberts)

Our mother took her final trip on June 20, 2017. We are comforted in knowing she is in the arms of lost loved ones and is now free of pain.
Geraldine Yvonne (Roberts) Hanson was born in Dayton, Ohio, on March 23, 1929. As a young adult Gerrie had a love for adventure. She joined the Civil Service and was stationed in Guam and Japan. While in Japan she met her future husband, Harold. They were married on January 31, 1953. They moved several times over the years, due to Harold’s Air Force career, but finally settled in Oshkosh in 1966.
For many years Gerrie worked in the kitchen of the original Winneconne School building. After that she was a rural delivery carrier for both the Oshkosh and Appleton newspapers. She would drive 80-100 miles per day, 6+ days per week. She really enjoyed this job even though it was all hours of the night and in all weather conditions. She was a strong and independent person.
Gerrie was an animal lover and her pets made her very happy. The Hanson household was always filled with four legged loved ones. We know she would have a smile on her face if we took this opportunity to say “please have your pets spayed or neutered and help control the pet population!” Horses were also a big part of her life. She and daughter Cynde raised and trained Quarter Horses for several years. Gerrie enjoyed watching her daughter show horses on the weekends.
Sadly, Gerrie was given many health challenges in her 88 years. Starting as a child with TB and living in a sanatorium, all the way through 5 different types of cancer. She fought them all and she won every battle. But each fight had taken its toll and her final battle was lost. She was an amazing woman and through all of the chemo treatments, radiations, and surgeries she never lost her sense of humor or her kind heart.
One of her favorite things to do was play Scrabble. She was an ace speller and continued to challenge herself until her last few days. She had a love for reading and we couldn’t keep up with supplying her books. Over the years some of the things she had enjoyed were Cribbage, frozen Margaritas, her swimming pool, Las Vegas, visiting her sister Bobbie in California, and the auctions at Westward Ho.
Gerrie was preceded in death by her husband Harold, her parents Orland and Anne Roberts and her sisters Pat and Bobbie.
She is survived by three daughters: Linda Ghedi (Bill) of San Antonio, TX; Sheryl (aka Shelley) Hanson of Green Bay, Cynde Hanson of Oshkosh and two granddaughters: Maggie Hanson of Green Bay and Stayci Hanson of Oshkosh.
We would like to offer a special thank you to the Creek View staff at Evergreen, Mom’s friend Kay Marx and to the caring neighbors who helped her out over the years.
Mom requested no service or visitation. If you would like, please make a donation to the pet rescue of your choice.
