Obituary for Gilbert Schmaltz

Gilbert W. "Gib" Schmaltz, age 88, of Oshkosh, died Thursday evening, October 27, 2005 unexpectedly at his daughter's residence. He was born on May 20, 1917 in Oshkosh to Herman and Elizabeth (Frank) Schmaltz. Gib married Edna Haase on November 9, 1946 in Oshkosh and she preceded him in death on May 2, 1989.
Gilbert was a life-long and faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church where he was a Deacon for many years. Gib was a member of the Oshkosh Pigeon Club and was an avid Chicago Bears fan. Gib was a loving and generous man who loved his home, family, and gardening.
Gib worked in his early years with the U.S. Conservation Corps before joining the U. S. Navy from July 17, 1940 to July 19, 1946 during WWII. He served his tour of duty aboard the USS Idaho and the USS Winslow. After discharge from the navy, Gib was employed for 33 years at American Excelsior, before retiring from Badger Lumber Company in 1982.
Survivors include one son: Timothy (Catherine) Schmaltz of Oshkosh; two daughters: Karen (Stephen) Rothenbach of Oshkosh; and Dianne (David) Rathbun of Oshkosh; five grandchildren: Olivia Schmaltz, Madeline Schmaltz, Christopher (Jodi) Rothenbach, Lara Rathbun, and Corrine Rathbun; four sisters: Lillian Liddle of Oshkosh; Dorothy Epprecht of Oshkosh; Lorraine (Gordon) Brown of Oshkosh; and Violet (Melvin) Rymer of Oshkosh; three brothers-in-law: Fred Stearns; William White, and Norman Kanzenbach; one sister-in-law: Irene Wiesner; life-long friend: Willard Jahnke; special friends: Jim and Joan Harmon; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Preceding Gib in death are his wife; parents; and four sisters: Lucille Getchel; Ruth White; Bernice Stearns; and Carolyn Seyforth.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 1, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. in Grace Lutheran Church, 913 Nebraska Street, with Reverend Gregg Schoeneck officiating. Interment will take place at Peace Lutheran Cemetery following the services. A time of visitation and support will be on Tuesday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the church. Memorials are requested to Grace Lutheran Church in Gib's memory.
