Obituary for Iris Knowlton (Kaye)

Iris Kaye Knowlton born in Luxemburg, WI, on August, 31, 1918, died peacefully in Oshkosh on March 6, 2015, at the age of 96. She is survived by her children, MaryLee Knowlton (Mark Sachner) of Milwaukee, Kristy Bradish (Mark) of Oshkosh, David Knowlton (Kate Lang) of Eau Claire, and Mark (Sharon) of Tigard, Oregon; grandchildren, Jessica, Ellie, Norah, Max, Abby, Sara, Sam, Casey, Suzanna, Jack, and Scott; and by two great-grandchildren, Dominick and Evan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel, and her sister, Laverne Kaye White.
She began to play violin when she was six years old and with her mother accompanying her, she performed at countless gatherings throughout Kewaunee County. At the University of Wisconsin, in Madison and Milwaukee, she continued to study music. After her marriage to her husband, Dan, (she met him in a music store) she played violin in the Lawrence University Symphony for more than forty years and in the Fox Valley Symphony till she was 80. As a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Appleton, she founded and led the Junior Choir and the Wednesday Morning Sunday School. For many years she taught piano to the children of Appleton. She traveled often to Europe, and attended concerts wherever she went. She was a member of Appleton's Wednesday Musicale. She initiated the first Suzuki Violin Program in Oshkosh through her granddaughter, who went on to play with Iris in the Fox Valley Symphony.
Her family life was set to music as it was a constant background in her home and her children all learned to play musical instruments with varying degrees of success. As the heart of her family, she was devoted to her children and grandchildren and to her extensive family. She loved and cared for them all and was loved and cared for by them in return.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Seefeld's Funeral Home, 1025 Oregon St. in Oshkosh at 2:00 pm. The family is grateful to the wonderful staff at Eastbrook in Oshkosh for the tender care she was given. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the Fox Valley Symphony.
