Obituary for Walter D. Evanson

Walter D. Evanson, age 81, of Oshkosh, died Saturday morning, January 24, 2004, at Aurora Medical Center. He was born in Oshkosh on February 8, 1922, the son of Earl J. and Elda B. (Kleinschmidt) Evanson. Walter married Dorothy J. Anderson on May 27, 1950 in Oshkosh.
Walter proudly served in country in the United States Navy from 1940 to 1943, achieving the rank of lieutenant. He remained in the reserves until his retirement from military duties in 1982. He was an active member of the Oshkosh Seniors Center, and served on their Committee on Aging. He was also a Cub and Boy Scout leader. Walter made his career working as a mechanical engineer, beginning in 1949 with the Marathon Corporation, working both in the state of Georgia and in Menasha. He also worked for Keikaefer Mercury, of Fond du Lac, and American Can, of Neenah. For many years, he was self-employed as he and Dorothy established the American Voyager travel club in the early seventies. Walter continued that career pursuit as a travel agent until quite recently. He was a master gardener and enjoyed sailing, collecting stamps and traveling.
Walter is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Oshkosh, and their children: two sons, Martin (Terry) Evanson, of Madison, and Leonard Evanson, of Boise, Idaho; a daughter, Carole (Bruce) Carroll, of Madison; a granddaughter, Cara Evanson, and a brother, Donald E. (Bertie) Evanson, of Spring Valley, California. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A visitation for Walter will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2004, from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. at Seefeld Family of Funeral Chapels, 1025 Oregon Street. Funeral services for Walter will be privately held by the family. A memorial has been established by Walter s family for the Boy Scouts of America.
